Speedaire 4B227 I seem to have a NOISE problem by Lou Lombardi (New York, NY) I have a Speedaire 4B227 which I purchased back in 2007. I have performed all the normal prevenitive measeure on it. Now I seem to have a NOISE problem. There is a loud rattling noise when the compressure turns on. It still turns on and off when the pressure in the tank is reach.
There is oile in the motor. I tried tightening the black shield abround the belt but it still making this loud than normal noise. Any suggestions??? Jan 14, 2012 Re: Phil, noise from day 1 by: MrAngry I recently picked up a small speedaire and being an auto tech for 30+ years I figured the knocking noise from mine was something simple, possibly sludge buildup causing the problem, or a reed valve issue.
I took the head off of it for inspection, I found little grunge in the head so I continued to the reeds & found one of the reeds was open just a bit. I removed the reeds one at a time cleaned all parts with carb clean, then 000 steel wool, I reassembled it with the only change made being I flipped the partially open reed over, other than a more even torque applied to the head bolts, a clean & inspect was all I did. I fired it up & the knocking noise was gone. I was blowing out some computer cases, went around to my garage to get a better nozzle, returned to hear the knocking noise again! The unit had cycled maybe 3-5 times to preset pressure.
I still think the sound is a reed issue, the former owner said it had made that noise since he got it too. I'll be looking at it again soon, if I can find the problem I'll put the info up here. Feb 07, 2011 Thanks by: Lou The noise sounds like a rattling noise. I have check the belts, oil and the safety box around the belts. Nothing appears to be loose or hanging.
I even took the front part of the box to see if the bolts inside are loose. Everything is tight.
It still reaches tank pressure and line pressure. Maybe a bad piston ring?? Maybe, Lou.
Tell you what, do a video of it with the noise, post it on You Tube, and I'll put the vid code on my site, asking folks to check it out and see if they can identify the noise, for you OK? Speedaire compressor pump 2z-499 only pumps to 80 psi by clint (overland park, kansas) i recently acquired a 3z-323 compressor unit which has an apparently new(er) 2z-499 compressor. Other posts on this site call for a 1.5 or 2 hp motor. Mine is only 1hp.
Im unsure if my motor is bad because it only pumps to 80 psi(then stalls) or if the newer pump is rated for a larger horsepower motor. Any help or advice is appreciated clint Bill says. Clint, I would be surprised if your motor is undersized for your pump, but I suppose it is possible.
In the absence of any other compressor issue, and I don't know what they may be as I don't have all the details about yours, if your motor stalls out at 80 PSI then I think either the pump cannot overcome the load going into the tank, or the motor hasn't got the oomph to compressor air past that point. I would suspect that it might be a motor failing, as opposed to being under-sized. Perhaps your next step is to get a load test on the motor? Cheers, Bill Comments for speedaire compressor pump 2z-499 only pumps to 80 psi. Aug 30, 2011 alas problem solved by: clint sorry i took so long to get back. When i was originally trying to get the motor working it was 10 degrees F.

I changed the oil to synthetic and this didnt help. Finally i checked the voltage like you suggested and this was the key.
The whole row of airplane hangars run a 20 amp breaker for all the lights. In the winter it is common to have engine heaters and space heaters on the same circuit which was significantly overloaded. Using the door motor circuit which each hangar has a separate circuit allowed good power which made both motors to run like new.I like the speedaire compressor set up because it runs so much smoother than the cheap chineese units flooding the market. Thanks for all the advice. Jan 15, 2011 2z-499 speedaire by: Anonymous I purchased a new 2 hp motor and it does not do any better.

I wonder if the line from the pressure shut off switch to the motor is too small or somehow bad or if the compressor has a stuck valve. I removed a the pipe from the pump to the tank and it still overheats the motor it wont even pump to 40 psi now. The earlier suggestion was a load test on the motor, and that would have shown if the motor was at fault. Since you have replaced the motor and problem persists, then it's not likely a motor related issue. 'I wonder if the line from the pressure shut off switch to the motor is too small'.

Isn't the issue, I don't think. That line is a sensor line, to feed the pressure switch with enough air to 'sense' the system pressure so it 'knows' when to turn on and off. That line doesn't have to be big as the amount of compressed air required for the switch to react is quite small. Based on your further information, you now need to look at. Yes, the valves, but also the mechanicals of the pump, as I feel that you may have a big problem there. If a one HP motor gets the tank pressure to 80 PSI, and a 2 HP can only get that pressure up to 40 PSI now, something is changing in the pump, and it may be that the pump itself is failing. What does a speedaire model # 21785B, 7.5 hp 2 phase motor compressor weight?
By mark goodwin (pleasanton CA) where can I find the weight of this compressor? I built a wall mounted platform for it and to get it inspected by the city building dept. They require the weight.I would also like to put vibration isolaters on it, can you recommend what type would be best? Bill says. I can't find that model, Mark. But if you go here: This is a 7.5 HP unit that weights 666 lbs. I suspect then, if you add another 100 lbs.
Or so for safeties sake, you should have a close weight. As to vibration, isolating the feet from the platform with an elastomeric (rubber type) mount might do, or you can move up to wire spring isolators, etc. Google these terms for much more info. Depends on how much money and vibration reduction you want. The motor and pump are probably already isolated from the mounts with elastomeric mounts. Cheers, Bill. Speedaire compressed air dryer 5Z772 plugged?
By Robert (Jamestown, N.Y.) This unit is used to dry air on a building thermostate system. It has worked well for about 18 yrs. Now the air from the compressor will not feed through the unit. It appears that something is plugged or a valve has stuck.
Can you offer any suggestions? Bill says. Wish I could. I tried to find the specs for your dryer with no success. If it's a smaller dryer, I don't know of any valves that might stick. Absolutely no air comes out the discharge, or is it just a trickle.
If a trickle, then you likely have a build up of debris (maybe minerals) in the tubing. Sorry, I really don't know. Maybe a kind reader can chime in?
