COURSE DISCRIPTIONS FOR ART Art 6 (Sixth grade). The standards of learning for grade six emphasize exploration. Using the elements of art and the principle of design as a framework, students investigate a variety of experiences and concepts.
Students explore various two- dimensional and three-dimensional art media such as drawing, pastels, painting (including watercolor), computer art and pottery, using a variety of expressive and technical approaches. Students are brought to understand the factors that distinguish artistic styles that clarify the role of art in American culture.
Through critical examination, students will determine how artists convey meaning through the use of forms, media, and symbols. Art 7 (Seventh grade).
Twelve weeks. Seventh graders will continue to create arts and crafts and begin to develop critical thinking skills needed in making and understanding good design. Using the foundation laid in sixth grade art, students will make decisions for arranging the elements in artistic compositions according to the principles of design. They will work with a variey of drawing media, watercolor, tempera, pastels, silk painting, weaving, and ceramics. Students will spend more time looking at and talking about art and learning about artists who have come before them. Students who have been selected for the county’s art talented and gifted program are strongly encouraged to sign up for art courses.
Art 8 (Eighth grade). One semester. This semester long art course is designed to continue building on the knowledge gained in previous art classes, and establish a solid background in the practice of good design concepts. In this class, whether it is drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, or pottery and other crafts, good design concepts will be emphasized.
This course allows time and opportunity for students to develop individual styles and try more unusual possibilities with various art media. Again, students are encouraged to take art classes if they have been identified as talented and gifted in art.
